The names panic bar was coined to indicate the way people when panicked in a mass evacuation due to an emergency crashed into the doors in order to exit.
Exit devices are required to use by building code and local fire departments where exit devices must be used. Because of the durability and easy to use of the exit device, panic hardware is also commonly installed in places where it isn't required by code.
